- Presenting Series
Filmmaker: Beth Harrington
The Winding Stream tells the story of the American roots music dynasty, the Carters and the Cashes, tracing the influence of their music from the 1920s through the present day, and how a seemingly unlikely young man named Johnny Cash would be the one to lift up the Carter legacy from obscurity. An intimate account of reciprocity and love, The Winding Stream features interviews and performances with roots music practitioners, including one of the last interviews ever granted by Johnny Cash. The On Screen/In Person film series is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. On Screen/In Person is designed to bring some of the best new independent American films and their respective filmmakers to communities across the mid-Atlantic region.
Our 2015-2016 filmmakers bring us stories that highlight the struggles that women have faced – and still face – in their daily lives and the quest for a supportive and equal society. They show us the power of the arts to heal physically and mentally and to create a space for personal expression.
Selected films include: Deaf Jam directed by Judy Lieff; Foreign Puzzle directed by Chithra Jeyaram; Miriam Beerman: Expressing the Chaos directed by Jonathan Gruber; REBEL directed by Maria Agui Carter; Small Small Thing: The Olivia Zinnah Story directed by Jessica Vale; and The Winding Stream directed by Beth Harrington.
The filmmakers will be present at screenings to engage local community members to build greater appreciation for their works and the art of film. The purpose of On Screen/In Person is to provide exhibition opportunities for independent filmmakers; provide access to film programming of excellence to audiences across the mid-Atlantic region; and to provide communities with opportunities that engender greater understanding of the filmmakers work and enhance the viewing experience.
On Screen/In Person is made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts' Regional Touring Program.
