Superstar Abdullah Ibrahim, a revered jazz pianist for over six decades, performs with his Ekaya Chamber Ensemble to commemorate and reimagine the music of The Jazz Epistles, “South Africa’s greatest bebop band of all time." (NPR). "Together for barely a year in the late 1950s, The Jazz Epistles—which included Ibrahim, as well as the great trumpeter Hugh Masekela and several others—were a short-lived sensation, breaking attendance records in Cape Town, channeling jazz giants from the US, and recording the first all-black modern jazz record in the country’s history. Yet the apartheid government, threatened by their progressive message, ultimately shut it down." (BAM blog) This historic music was almost lost forever — only 500 copies were made in 1959, buried, and rediscovered decades later after the tyranny of apartheid ended in South Africa. Please note: There has been a change to the performers for this concert. Trumpeter Freddie Hendrix will replace Hugh Masekela who recently passed away.
