Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones is the creator of The New York Times’ major multimedia initiative, The 1619 Project, named for the year the first enslaved Africans arrived in America, featuring essays and art by Black American authors, activists, journalists and more. The book version of The 1619 Project was an instant #1 New York Times bestseller. Named a MacArthur Genius, Professor Hannah–Jones has received the National Magazine Award three times, a Peabody, and two George Polk Awards. She also serves as the Knight Chair of Race and Journalism at Howard University, where she is founding the Center for Journalism & Democracy.
